Of all of the challenges that Yaakov Avinu faced, the death of Rachel was the hardest.
Even though it is the way of Tzaddikim not to question the way that Hashem runs the world, at the same time, there was great depth to the death of Rachel Imenu (as is expressed in the Zohar, Bereshis 175) and had Yaakov asked, Hashem would have revealed it to him.
However, Yaakov didn't, and Hashem showed it to him anyway.
But a person needs to ask Hashem to see the depth of His will, to see what he wants from us, which is different than questioning the way He runs things. Hashem will never hide these things from someone who appeals to his kindness.
We see this point driven home with the story of Reuven interfering with Yaakov's beds and concubines, but then we see that then the Torah testifies that Yaakov had 12 sons. The מי השלוח says that through Reuven's indisrection, it was revealed that there are 16 different ways to count the shvatim, each a "teaching in itself" for those who learn the Torah... each a different way to understand the way Hashem.

We can understand this teaching of the מי השלוח as framed by another teaching found in the second volume, פרשת וישלח. Every time that Yaakov Avinu faced a painful challenge it was immeadiately followed by a revelation.
Based on צדקת הצדיק קעא we can understand that
Trouble and pain is a such a profoundly poweful form of good which we do not possess the ability to deal with, therefore it results in pain. After we have had a process to digest- which sometimes takes a lifetime, we can begin to see the good through the pain. As a result we have Tisha B'av- which seems to be the most painful day on the calendar. (Which we are told will be a yom tov, in the future.) R' Tzadok, says that the Yamim Tovim of Tishrei are the splitting up of the good of Tisha B'av and dividing into portions in which it will be palatable. This also is the function of the 7 Haftaros of consolation (See בני יששכר ) to filter the light of tisha b'av until it is palatable.
Each painful experience in Yaakov Avinu's life was mitiagted by a consolation and discussion with Hashem, filtering the light of the occurrence. However, a person needs to daven for this, like the Berdichover was known to daven on seder night, "Master of the world, I have more than just 4 questions. I have millions of questions about widdows and orphans. But just let me know that it's all from You."
The מי השלוח tells us that we need to daven in such a way to Hashem- to see what He wants from us and to see the depth of what's going on- not to criticize Him, Chas V'Shalom rather to know Him better
